Around Town: Lighthouse

"A DESTRUCTION, AN ANNIHILATION that only man can provoke, only man can prevent," said Elie Weisel. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum exists not only as a testament to those who died and to the credo "never again," but also to draw our eyes to destructions happening today around the world. Photo by Gerald Martineau/The Washington PostAs The Post's David Montgomery reports, the building serves as the backdrop for a brilliant photographic projection — images from the genocide in the Sudanese region of Darfur. The images in the slideshow are not those gory pictures that have, tragically, become too typical of the crisis, but that is not to say that the museum isn't keenly aware of the depth of the tragedy — in fact, the institution was one of the first to recognize Darfur as a genocide.

Anne Applebaum writes about the broad international appeals for intervention in The Post.

» CAPITOL HILL: Drinks are on Larry Hanauer, a Democratic aide who made national news several months back when he was stripped of his classification status for allegedly leaking sensitive information to the press. House Intelligence Chairman Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., plugged him back into the flow, according to Roll Call's John Bresnahan. But Hanauer's boss, Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif., is likely not to be plugged back into the flow in the next Congress, as Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi is expected to choose another House Democrat to chair the panel. » BOWIE: Yikes! The Post's Joshua Partlow and Martin Weil report that a 76-year-old former Prince George's County judge G.R. Hovey Johnson wound up dead after a shootout with police at his Maryland home. Police and Johnson's wife were not hurt. [WaPo]

» NORTHEAST: Of mild national concern, but perhaps an item that mediaphiles will take interest in: WRC/NBC4 says that former human resources director Randall Casseday of The Washington Times was busted while soliciting sex from a 13-year-old minor. [WT]

» ON THE RAILS: In transportation-related news, blogger Brunch Bird skewers an unintentionally hilarious new ad campaign she's seen in Metrorail stations — one for a horror movie in which tourists are the target. Or the monsters? This writer would like to suggest, "Kiss your fanny pack goodbye." [Brunch Bird]
