Local Blog Log: Interactive Theatre
BORAT? Bobby? Let's Go to Prison? Have you considered which theater you should settle in for your movie-viewing pleasure? Dealing with Subterfuges sizes up various theaters and their levels of audience participation:
Those of you who live in DC know that there are certain theatres in the area that have a rep as being "audience participation" theatres. I have friends who absolutely will not, under any circumstances go to these theatres. No matter what. Not even if it's a movie they're dying to see, and these are the only theatres in the area showing it. They will drive to Annapolis or wait until it’s out on DVD before they will set foot in one of these theatres. And at the Regal Cinema 14 at Gallery Place, pictured here, that means having the man behind you pat your "shoulder over the back of the chair."I, on the other hand, love them.

Addison Road
The Theaters in the area rate as follows:
#1 The Uptown...Lately they've been showing crap movies, but you can't wrong with big event movies here.
#2 Arlington Cinema Drafthouse...With local punk scene servers, an atmosphere of comraderie, food at your table, and great cult film showings this place rules!
The only downsides? a small screen and bad sound.
#3 Regal Gallery Place...It's big it's loud and obnoxious but it has nice big screens and great sound...when some idiot isn't answering his cellphone.
#4 E Street a.k.a. Visions: Part Deux has a rich yuppie clientele, frou-frou foods and cellphones don't work. Yippee!!
#5 Would probably be the AFI Silver in Silver Spring.
By DCMovieGirl , Posted November 20, 2006 5:44 PM"Audience participation" is killing the theater industry. Something needs to be done about it, soon. I don't care if they need to hire an usher for every theater to toss people out for being loud, if that's what it takes.
