A Foggy Bottom Welcome for GW's Next Chief

Photo by Katherine Frey/The Washington PostSTEVEN KNAPP, the man selected by the George Washington University trustees to be the school's next president, was formally introduced to the Foggy Bottom campus on Wednesday. Currently the provost at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Knapp has been touted as a leader "with the academic credentials, fundraising experience and skills to push the school to become a more ambitious and better endowed research institution," as The Post's Susan Kinzie reports.

Outgoing President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, a sometimes blunt administrator and prolific fundraiser, will pass on dealing with the often rancorous town-gown relations with the city and the school's neighbors to Knapp, who is described as "more modest, more low-key."

Odd fact: In addition to being an English literature professor and an accomplished drummer, Knapp is involved in the sheep business. It's a job that's forced him to go shoulder-to-shoulder with a difficult sheep, wrestling with it so that he could clean its hooves, The Post's Kinzie reports. Look out, D.C. Council.
