Metro's Added Bonus: Yellow Line to Greenbelt

Courtesy WMATAIT USED TO BE PRETTY SIMPLE, sort of. The new year ushered in extended off-peak Yellow Line service from its former end point at Mount Vernon Square-7th Street-Convention Center to the new terminal at Fort Totten via the Green Line's Mid-City corridor route. (Yellow Line service will continue to stop at Mount Vernon Square during rush hour, however.)

The construction that forced the rerouting of a number of Metrorail lines this weekend brought Yellow Line trains out even further, beyond Fort Totten to the Green Line's Greenbelt terminal in Prince George's County. That change in service has ended now, but if you see any Yellow Line trains off-loading and accepting passengers at places like West Hyattsville and Prince George's Plaza during the mid-afternoon today or any other weekday before the evening rush hour starts, don't be surprised. Reports The Post's Dr. Gridlock:

That quirk exists because Metro needs those two trains at Greenbelt for the start of rush hour service on the Green Line at 3:30 p.m. Rather than sending empty Yellow Line trains to Greenbelt for that turnaround, Metro decided to add some service by allowing passengers to board.
