D.C. Ranks High in Healthiness
THOUGHT LOS ANGELES was where the health nuts hang out? Not so, according to Cooking Light magazine, which reveals its list of the country's 20 healthiest cities in its new issue.
D.C. landed at No. 3 on the list (behind Seattle and Portland, Ore.), and Baltimore snagged the 11 spot. The Schwarzenegger state's first and only appearance is at No. 5 — for San Francisco.
"We were looking for the cities that best exemplify what Cooking Light is about," said editor Mary Kay Culpepper. So her staff not only examined stats from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but also factored in the number of farmers markets and public green spaces. "D.C. is one of the premier cities for walking around," she noted.
Serving up tasty food in restaurants also gave D.C. a push. Although lots of eats might increase residents' waistlines, Culpepper said they're also critical to shaping eating behaviors. "It gives people a standard to judge their own cooking and it inspires how they cook at home," she explained. So take that, L.A.
