Local Blog Log: Red Line Mysteries

Photo by Michael Lutzky/The Washington PostOH THE MYSTERIES of Metrorail train frequency. The seemingly random rate at which trains enter and exit stations has led riders to come up with wild theories to explain what they cannot understand.

On Metro's busiest route, the Red Line, trains come at regular intervals just minutes apart, except when they don't. Commenters on WhyIHateDC explored the issue and vented their frustrations, which included paying a "rush-hour price for non-rush-hour service." Continues one commenter, named Mikey:

The real drama doesn't occur until the commute home, where my wait at Metro Center is either 1 minute or 10 minutes. I don't understand how the arrival times can be spaced out as "1 minute.. 12 minutes... 13 minutes." How the hell does that happen? ... The greatest is when the 12-minute train finally arrives but stalls in the tunnel anyway, when no train is ahead of it for miles.
Hmmm.

» SIDEWALK SMOKERS: D.C. smokers are still adjusting to neighborhood sidewalks. There's some anger, resentment and in a rant by Rock Creek Rambler, some profanity. The smoker/blogger writes that smoke-free bars now "smell like stale beer, puke and dirty mop water." [Free Ride/Express; Rock Creek Rambler]
