Catoe Drops Metro Fare-Hike Plan, For Now

Photo by Melina Mara/The Washington PostA FARE HIKE WON'T be coming to Metro in the year ahead. Nor will a slate of multi-tiered pricing plans and downtown congestion fees proposed last year. As The Post's Lena H. Sun reports, Metro General Manager John Catoe has officially shelved those plans, which pre-dated his arrival at the transit agency and failed to generate much goodwill from the commuting public. To fend off a fare hike, Catoe is moving forward with a plan to slash jobs and cut costs within the transit agency.

But a fare hike might be necessary next year. And Catoe's plan is the kind of solution that hasn't been seen in D.C. before. Writes Sun:

... Catoe said he would propose a fare-increase plan this summer or fall that would be tied to cost-of-living measures, such as the consumer price index. Fares would rise at regular intervals rather than by big jumps every few years.
The idea is drawing some criticism from the Metro board.
