Neighbors Drink Up for Eastern Market

Photo by Kevin Clark/The Washington PostWHEN CLAY JOHNSON started the Facebook.com group "Rescue Eastern Market," on the day the historic building was devastated by fire, he probably didn't think it would turn into a way for lifelong Washingtonians and D.C. transplants alike to give back to the neighborhood that called the historic market home.

The social networking site has become a virtual location for making real change. Within days, the group grew to more than 1,000 people, and on Tuesday, they will be teaming up with local bars and businesses to raise money for the Capitol Hill Community Foundation. Each bar, restaurant or coffee shop will donate between five and 10 percent of its business from happy hour on to the fund.

More than 20 venues have signed up to contribute, including well-known Capitol Hill haunts the Hawk 'N' Dove, Union Pub and 18th Amendment.

  • Thanks for highlighting tonight's event in support of the merchants at Eastern Market. As a board member with the Capitol Hill Community Foundation, it has been amazing to see such a diverse group of people come together for what is truly a neighborhood institution. So far we have raised about $170,000 in support of the merchants -- 100% of every contribution will be used in support of our friends at Eastern Market. Please keep up with our fundraising efforts by checking out www.capitolhillcommunityfoundation.org. And thanks again!

  • Just to make sure people know what Erin's comment is referring to, she's hosting a parallel fundraiser at the upstairs bar of Hawk 'n' Dove that will donate *all* its proceeds -- the door contributions, even the bar tips -- to the CHCF relief fund for the Eastern Market vendors. And when she says there'll be a raffle for a print by an Eastern Market vendor, it's not just any vendor -- it's Dan Kessler, whose amazing work has stood outside the Market for years and years, and who has some pretty incredible prints of the Market itself that I've spent the past year convincing myself need to hang in my living room!

Also, an FYI -- there's a website set up to track *all* the news, plans, and other information surrounding the Eastern Market fire and rebuilding effort; it's called Save Eastern Market, and it lives at http://www.saveeasternmarket.org/ . There's a calendar linked in the sidebar that tries to stay abreast of all the events (like last night's meeting, tonight's bar and restaurant fundraisers, the Dining Out for Eastern Market event on 5/21), and hopefully it can help people remain connected to the rebuilding effort.
