Alberto's Raises Stakes in Jumbo Slice Pizza Fight

Photo by Bill O'Leary/The Washington PostIN ADAMS MORGAN, options for late-night eats expanded recently with the addition of an 18th Street NW location for Alberto's pizza.

Before the arrival of Amsterdam Falafel in 2004, night owls' choices for an after-midnight snack in the neighborhood were limited to empanadas and jumbo slice pizza from three competing places on the 18th Street strip between Columbia and Kalorama roads. As the throngs of bar-goers increased, so too did the competition between the jumbo slice joints, which, frankly, made their pizza less appetizing.

Enter Alberto's, whose Dupont Circle location on P Street NW west of 20th Street has been getting rave reviews since it opened a few years ago. While the new Alberto's, much like the original location, can get mobbed, the quality of the slice and variety of topping options is sure to increase pressure in not only the neighborhood pizza wars, but also the competition over cheap eats — whether they're actually cheap or just should be.

  • Sadly, the 18th St. location will not be serving the stuffed-crust Chicago-style pies like the original on P St.
