Pizzeria Paradiso Vets Open Petworth Joint

LOOKING FOR UNASSUMING — but excellent — pizzas "a lot closer to the ideal of New York or Philly style than they are to the boutique standard of places like 2 Amys and Pizzeria Paradiso"? Then Washingtonian's Todd Kliman — the source of the quote above — would direct you to Moroni & Bros. on Georgia Avenue near Decatur Street NW in Petworth.

Here's the restaurant's uplifting story from its Web site:

Moroni & Brothers is a dream come true for owners Jose and Reyna Velasquez. Originally from El Salvador, Jose and Reyna came to the United States 17 years ago, leaving a war-torn country behind and looking for opportunity in the U.S. They began working as dishwashers at Pizzeria Paradiso in 1991 and worked there for 15 years, mastering the art of pizza making while successfully managing two restaurants.
Online buzz says that the new place offers wood-fired pizza that's better than the newish Red Rocks on Park Road at 11th Street NW. Of course, individual opinions will surely differ.

But there's more than just pizza. Look for Salvadoran specialties from the Velasquez family as well.

  • That's great, but who is Moroni?

  • Not sure. Perhaps they have a love for the capital of the Comoros islands off the coast of Africa?
