Douglass Bridge Work Not Done Yet

EARLIER THIS SUMMER, the Frederick Douglass Bridge was shut down for many weeks so the District could do some needed structural work and lower its approach to make South Capitol Street a more eye-appealing thoroughfare near the Nationals' new ballpark.

But that was just the first phase: Construction will continue on the bridge, and this coming weekend, the bridge will be closed to all inbound traffic. From the D.C. Department of Transportation:

The second phase of construction includes additional work on the swing span area of the bridge and streetscape improvements along South Capitol Street. Upgrades include new environmentally sensitive lighting, pedestrian access improvements such as handicap ramps, pedestrian traffic signals and new sidewalks.
The work starts Friday at 9 p.m. and is scheduled to wrap up no later than 4 a.m. on Monday, the department says. The posted detour will bring traffic across the Anacostia River via the 11th Street bridges.
