Hotel Washington to Become a W

THEORIES HAVE SWIRLED for years to explain why D.C. has lacked a trendy W hotel. The city's building height limit got in the way, perhaps — or maybe the District just wasn't cool enough to catch the chain's eye.

And then there was the competition hypothesis: With an array of boutique Kimpton hotels, like the Hotel Monaco, Hotel Rouge, Hotel Helix and Hotel Palomar, there wasn't much room for a W.

Throw all of that conjecture out the window. D.C. is finally getting a W.

If all goes according to plan, the hotel will move into town in 2009, the Washington Business Journal reported. It'll be taking the place of the 90-year-old Hotel Washington, one of D.C.'s oldest.

And it will certainly be a lucrative property: The view from its rooftop terrace — looking out over the Treasury Department headquarters, White House campus and the National Mall — is priceless.

  • Do you think they'll change a lot -- it sure is nice all on its' own...I don't quite understand why they'd want the "W" name associated with it. I mean, c'mon, just check out these pics of the Hotel Washington!
