B.I.O.: The Thrill of the Chase

ON FIRST DATES, hearts are meant to be stolen. Not purses. Yet as Mark Lewis and Jennifer Whitener searched Chinatown for a restaurant with a shorter wait than at Matchbox, Jennifer's purse was snatched right out of her hands. "Mark chased after the purse-snatcher, and I chased after Mark — in heels," Jennifer recalls. While he "zipped through the streets," Jennifer found her purse on the sidewalk. "We spent the rest of the evening filing a police report and being questioned by detectives," says Mark. And they ended up dining (on pizza) at Matchbox after all.
Pizza played another role later: "When I got down on one knee, she initially thought I was looking for food," says Mark, who proposed at Jennifer's desk. "Our office had pizza earlier and, because he was acting so strangely and looking around my desk, I thought he was looking for something to eat," she explains.
Jennifer, 29, works at an architecture firm. Mark, 30, works at an international finance association. They will live in Tenleytown after their wedding on April 12 in Ocean City, N.J.
