D.C. Council Tables Noise Bill
DON'T EXPECT PEACE AND QUIET at the corner of H and 8th streets NE anytime soon.
In recent years, the amplified speeches by members of the Israelite School of Universal Practical Knowledge that ring through the air on most Saturdays have sparked complaints in the community. The clamor against the clangor has risen to such a level that one determined blogger, David Klavitter of Quest for Quiet, has documented his struggles with the noise and the D.C. government, which lacks regulations governing such loud sounds.
Legislation introduced by D.C. Council members Mary Cheh, Tommy Wells and Kwame Brown that would place a 70 decibel limit on amplified sound was stopped this morning by a 7-5 vote that indefinitely tables the measure.
Writes Klavitter on his blog:
It appears that a majority of the D.C. city council cares more about special interests than protecting residents at home from amplified noise. Why was the legislation stopped? As the City Paper reports, "more than 100 members of the Metropolitan Washington Council AFL-CIO and its affiliated organizations showed up for the council meeting" concerned about the rights of protesters to use amplified sound.

It seems like the only sensible thing to do would be for everyone to gather up their bullhorns and head out to the front yards of each of the seven council members every Saturday and Sunday from 8:00am to 8:00pm and protest. Over 80 decibels.
You know, because it's important that we exercise our protected rights.
