Red Carpet Roadkill: Oscar's Worst Dressed
SO MANY LEADING LADIES looked lovely at last night's Academy Awards that at first we wondered if we'd even be able to come up with a list of the worst-dressed. (Our faves included Heidi Klum in Galliano and Jennifer Garner, who looked glam in Oscar de la Renta even when she was oddly kissed on the neck by Gary Busey.)
Then we saw Tilda Swinton.
It must have been a busy day, what with being nominated as best supporting actress and all, but it looked like she hurriedly stepped out of the tub, realized she had to get to the theater and decided to just use the shower curtain as a dress. And to forgo makeup. She did have time to color her hair that shocking, Halloweenish tangerine color.
Another casualty? Jennifer Hudson. Keeping her upper body corralled can't be easy, but we find ourselves surprisingly agreeing with Perez Hilton — that halter top wasn't the answer. In fact, it only led to more questions.
Red carpet reporters were raving to Marion Cotillard about her outfit, but we wonder if she smelled as fishy as she looked. Did her dress come from the Daryl Hannah collection?
And we never thought Nicole Kidman would look anything but ravishing, but her bling seems to overpower this Balenciaga gown, no?
Although paparazzi were roaming the red carpet like packs of wolves, nobody appeared to be on the prowl more than Diablo Cody. The Juno screenwriter's get up was an Egyptian and leopard print ensemble not even Cleopatra would love. Not a bucketful of beautiful, homeslice. Do not pass Go.
But last and certainly least was the wife of Daniel Day Lewis, director Rebecca Miller. She rocked red bow straps, two massive black brooch baubles and black and white checked shoes.
Wow. Just wow.
Clearly, she made the ultimate Oscar sacrifice: drawing attention to herself to deflect it from her Best Actor-nominated husband, who wore brown kicks with his black suit. If that's love we don't know what is. (And maybe it helped him win?)

I couldn't agree more about Tilda Swinton. I literally applied bronzer to my television sscreen because that pasty white skin was blinding me.
By Susan , Posted February 25, 2008 9:34 AMCouldn't agree with you more on Daniel Day Lewis' wife. i guess she was looking for attention? had to be that. otherwise, she had to have lost a bet...
By Tracey , Posted February 25, 2008 9:38 AMAnd what about Nicole? The black dress wasn't bad, but a 1,399 carat necklace is a little much, right? I would have neck cramps from wearing that thing all night!
By Kris Coronado , Posted February 25, 2008 9:54 AMAs a Washingtonian I will never understand Hollywood. It's not in my blood. But I will mock them openly. How could Tilda Swinton's friends let her walk on that red carpet without applying some sort of eye liner / eye shadow combination. It goes to prove that Hollywood is superficial and everyone is out for personal gain. Shame, shame Tilda's "friends."
By Emily , Posted February 25, 2008 10:36 AMAlthough Perez Hilton's pic is not the best of her "girls", when I saw Jennifer Hudson on E's red carpet preshow last night, I thought she looked gorgeous! I love that a bigger women was bold enough to rock the white. We need more body confidence like that!
By Barb , Posted February 25, 2008 12:10 PMAmy Adams easily had the worst color dress and what was Tilda Swinton thinking?
Cameron Diaz -- you can't rely on your pretty face all the time!
By John Radwanski , Posted February 25, 2008 12:36 PMIt is not surprising that Diablo Codys ensemble goes beyond the popular vision of red carpet elegance into the realm of head-turning self-expression. Do screenwriter's even have stylists? Nicole Kidman looking like black velvet diamond display on the other hand, is more shocking. In addition to those mentioned above, I think that Katherine Heigl was a favorite for me.
By Amy DeBone , Posted February 25, 2008 1:03 PMWhat about Kelly Preston's orange cream color dress? I give her credit for trying something new, but it just seemed an icky color to me. Any one else think so?
By Kris Coronado , Posted February 25, 2008 1:12 PMgreat article and nice use of homeslice.
By GC , Posted February 25, 2008 1:16 PMSome people watch way too much TV. Ameez.. Didn't SI just publish the swimsuit issue?
By Sean , Posted February 25, 2008 1:23 PMI loved Kelly Preston's dress color, really different yet didn't wash her out. Plus, i was happy to see that SHE was the one wearing the dress and not her hubbie...
By Tracey , Posted February 25, 2008 2:29 PMBlack and white checkered shoes??? Why??? It's like some sort of crazy plot twist. Keep to the movies, Rebecca, and let your stylist direct your outfit!
By Em , Posted February 25, 2008 2:42 PMI'm surprised so many people were attacking Kelly Preston's dress color -- wasn't it similar to the yellow Michelle Williams wore to the Oscars with Heath Ledger to much acclaim? That dress was daring.
