Idol Chatter: Get Ready to Schlock
IF YOU WATCHED last year's "American Idol" finale, you're likely very familiar with the trite aural dreck that was the final song, "This Is My Now."
It was a tune dreamed up by Christian music artist Scott Krippayne and his pastor, Jeff Peabody, and entered into the first "American Idol" songwriter contest. It was a hooky story of the ride from obscurity to success, which made it a shoo-in for a show that's always jonesing for a cheap shot to the heart.
This year's entries are no different. "We're Gonna Make It" has an Avril Lavigne-ish sound and sports lyrics like "Ain't no song that we can't weather. You and I will last forever more." Then there's "The Time of My Life," which features this stunner: "And all that I needed was there all along, within my reach, close as the beat of my heart."
Gag.

» COMING UP: The "Idol" hopefuls test drive the songs of Mariah Carey — good luck with that, guys. The performance show's tonight; results are Wednesday. I'll have fresh recaps on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at readexpress.com/idol.

I am cautiously optimistic about tonight's show. Definitely a tough challenge for all the Idol's except Sayesha, in terms of potential range (ok maybe lil David too). There lies the trap of trying to be match Mariah vocally. With that said, the Idol's who know their niche have an excellent opportunity to break out of the pack by performance and interpretation. I'm actually looking forward to see what Jason will do. Might be a night of real entertainment!
By Sheriff , Posted April 15, 2008 9:00 AMI'm very afraid of tonight. I actually think Carly and Syesha are at the greatest disadvantage, because they will be most expected to do well. The guys (aside from David A.) won't be expected to be able to sing like Mariah. David C. has already proven his ability to take a pop song and make it current. Brooke will take a Mariah song and strip it down. Jason will do the same, and/or make goofy faces that will get his fans to vote.
David A. will take one of Mariah's message songs about heroes, miracles, dreams, rainbows and/or puppies. I really wish he'd sing one of her fluffier things, though, just for a change of pace.
By EOC , Posted April 15, 2008 10:54 AMWow, if I didn't like this show so much, I would have to sit this one out! I can't imagine it being any good. But I guess we will all have to wait and see.
