They Say It's Your Earth Day: Events Tonight

YOU WOKE UP on Sunday and saw the rain pouring down and thought "Well, I can't go to Earth Day now."

Sure, you were all set for the free concerts, like the one on the Mall — and maybe you were even going to wear this old tie-dye shirt you got that one time from your friend who went to Burning Man, and it was gonna be sweet, man. But the rain. The rain! Mother Earth herself was thwarting you. She couldn't have expected your attendance, not with all that rain.

Well guess what? You are not off the hook. Earth Day is officially today, suckers, and the sun is shining. No excuses. Just think to yourself: What would George Clooney do?

(Answer: he'd buy another hybrid car and sit in it and pretend it's a spaceship and that he is Clark Gable, Space Cowboy. Like he always does. But I digress.)

Anyway, it's Tuesday, and the Earth still needs your love and attention. Wondering what you can do? Here are some ideas.

WALK THIS WAY
If you've got a car, take a moment to feel guilty for being PART OF THE PROBLEM. Then leave work early for a nature walk through the Marumsco Marsh in Woodbridge. Members of Friends of the Potomac River Refuges and Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge will host the walk, and you'll learn about animals! And plants! It'll be awesome.

SOUTHERN STRATEGY
If it's too cold out (or if you're afraid of ducks), try the Venezuelan Embassy, where they'll be showing short films highlighting the natural beauty of Latin America and the Caribbean. At 6 p.m., catch a seven-minute documentary on the Andes, then one on Honduras, followed by a 48-minute film about Costa Rica. You'll come away with a greater appreciation for natural beauty — and vacation plans.

AN UPHILL CLIMATE
Amy Goodman, host of "Democracy Now," will appear with James Hansen and Jim Wallis for the 2nd Annual Climate Super Rally at Lisner Auditorium. Apparently there will be both music and activism, plus you can take public transportation to get there, which will make you feel good about yourself. If you need something to get you excited about fighting climate change, there's nothing like being in a giant auditorium of people getting yelled at about their responsibilities. Go here for tickets.

If you can't make these events, or if you're too depressed about your part in the planet's destruction to face the universe, here's your last option: Go down to the Mall and have a friend videotape you singing "Colors of the Wind" while doing cartwheels. Then, post it on YouTube for our amusement. Oh, and take a cloth bag to the grocery store.
