Up Pops Tart: Tangysweet
D.C. GOT A WEST COAST-STYLE infusion last Friday with the grand opening of Tangysweet (2029 P St. NW). Like SoCal's Pinkberry, the secret to this frozen yogurt's appeal is that it's tangy, not sugary-sweet — it tastes like real, non-frozen yogurt. Fans rave about toppings, which include everything from fruit to almonds to Cocoa Pebbles. And yogurt is good for you, right?
"The health benefits of real yogurt come mainly from the active cultures," says Danielle Omar, a Fairfax-based registered dietician. "'Good bacteria' can increase vitamin and mineral bioavailability [in English: how well your bod absorbs nutrients] and promote the growth of healthy bacteria in the colon." Plus, Tangy Sweet's yogurt is packed with protein, calcium, and potassium.
You could scarf Dannon for the same benefits — any yogurt with the National Yogurt Association's "Live and Active Cultures" seal has enough Lactobacillus acidophilus to keep tummies happy. (The certification process takes a few months, so Tangy Sweet's stuff doesn't have the NYA seal yet.) The fruit toppings kick in extra vitamins and, as Omar says, "you can't go wrong with fresh fruit!" But don't go overboard: Frozen yogurt may have about half the calories of ice cream, but it's still sugary.
Tangysweet's the first yogurt-only store to open in the District, but sweet treat-seekers have been getting their fro-yo fix since last year at salad/yogurt joint Sweetgreen (3333 M St. NW). While you're there, pick up one of those salads.
