B.I.O.: Check Mate
P. WELDON MENDES, 26, made a strong impression on Jeanette Phillips, 29. He was handsome and funny, but it was his confidence that struck her heart. Says Jeanette, "We went to Busboys and Poets. We laughed so much, it was crazy. I remember the bill came, and it was roughly $60. He pulled all this cash from his pocket, which was about $45, looked at me, and said, ‘Put in the rest.' He said it not in a rude or annoying way, but almost like we were already in a relationship."
Weldon's sense of certainty continued to impress Jeanette. "A few months after we met,"she says, "Weldon bought a ring, and he showed it to me."A few months later while on a trip to Dominica to meet his family, Weldon popped the question.
They'll marry July 11 at Fort Shirley in Weldon's hometown, Cabrits, Dominica. The bride will wear an eggshell-colored gown with a 7-foot-long train. Her brother, who owns Kidd's Island Bakery in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., will make a dark, fruit-filled rum cake for them. They'll honeymoon in Greece.
