Archaeology, American Style: 'Written In Bone'

Photo by Chip Clark/Smithsonian Institution THIS WEEK: Hoping to capture fans of CSI, the Smithsonian opens an exhibit this week entitled "Written in Bone," based on forensic analysis of bodies hundreds of years old.

Colonial settlements yield myriad bodies and clues, allowing archaeologists to play detective and determine causes of death. The Smithsonian even created a little Web comic that shows a crack team of researchers solving an ancient mystery. Hey guys, we're like Indiana Jones! Kinda. Guys?

It might not be quite as exciting as "CSI," but if you can get your 6-year-old nephew to stop wanting to be a detective and start wanting to be an archaeologist, you'll lengthen his expected life span considerably, so it's worth a shot.
