B.I.O: All Grown Up

EVERYONE HAS A friend or two who married his or her high-school sweetheart. But Sam Newton and Ebony Powell were sixth-grade sweethearts. After she met him through a mutual friend, "we concluded that we had a crush on one another and decided to be boyfriend and girlfriend," she says. "I knew she was going to be my girl!" Sam says. But two and a half years later, the couple were parted by evil forces: Her family moved away. They rarely saw each other in the years after, but in 2001, he called her. "He looked very nice and all grown up," Ebony says. When he saw her that day, he knew, again, that they were meant to be together.

Sam, 28, is a driver for MetroAccess. Ebony, 28, is a teacher registry representative. They live in Capitol Heights and will wed July 18 in Kinston, N.C.
