A Rat In a Maze: A.J. Jacobs

THURSDAY: A.J. Jacobs, like Morgan Spurlock, has apparently devoted his life to stunt journalism. We have from time to time wondered, during dull moments, what it would be like to live off the grid or on the Oregon Trail for x amount of time. But we passed the idea by — we didn't think "Book deal!"

Jacobs' newest "I spent a year doing ____" concept — previously he spent a year following biblical rules and one reading the encyclopaedia — is chronicled in "The Guinea Pig Diaries," which records his year trying every self-improvement technique he can find. The only reason he gets away with this is that he's a funny, engaging writer, so his gig at Sixth and I this weekend should be roundly enjoyable.

» Sixth and I Historic Synagogue, 600 I St. NW; Thu., Oct. 1, 7 p.m., $6 or get two free tickets when you buy the book; 202-408-3100. (Gallery Place)
