Baggage Check: Annual Stress

Dr. Andrea Bonior dives into the world of psychology. Dr. Andrea BoniorIT'S THAT TIME of the year again. No, not for eating leftover Halloween candy or raking leaves, but — you guessed it — finding out the results of the American Psychological Association's annual "Stress in America" survey!

One of the most noteworthy new findings is the effects of parental stress on children. Most interestingly, parents seem a bit in the dark about how much their stress does effect their kids, and how much stress their kids have in general.

While 31 percent of mothers and fathers say that their children have little or no stress, only 9 percent of kids report that this is actually the case as they see it. Of course, it all seems relative, and parents — since they had to trudge 10 snow-ridden miles uphill to school in their day — might be prone to think that kids don't have anything to complain about.

Nonetheless, stress has tangible effects on children and teens, and can be associated with emotional and physical risks. To find out more about the signs and how to help, check out these tips from the American Psychological Association.
